What do you use for Email?

by Abdo on August 4, 2009

Hi All,

I was just updating how I use my Email account, and wondered how others access their Email.

I was working mainly with my PC all the time so, was comfortable checking my Email from Thunderbird, accessing the account via POP3. When I started to access the same account from the laptop too using POP3, it was kind of waste of time and disorganized as the Emails get downloaded even if you checked it somewhere else.

The solution had been using IMAP other than POP3 to sync the account with multiple Email clients, as I manage multiple addresses from multiple domains, it's kind of hard to manage, so I decided to center all of my Emails with my Gmail account and configured my Gmail account accordingly.

What do you need with Email, receiving Emails targeting you from several addresses, in my case I have a personal Email I use for everything that doesn't have to do with the business, I have an Email for DeveloperMan, because it's kind of cool and professional having such Email. Plus, accounts for managing Al-Adham, Egypt-Designers and Egypreneur.

I want to receive the messages sent for all these accounts and I want to reply from these addresses too, how should I go about configuring Gmail and my server to do that.

First step in the back-end is creating the Email account, in my case I wanted 2 mail boxes one related to everything had to do with the business and its projects and another one kind of personal, I use it for everything else.

So, I made an account for amagdy.net and decided to make it my personal account forever, and I made forwards for every account that's personal in nature, while I made also a business account al-adham.com where also everything related to the business is being forwarded.

Physically, there is only 2 account, 2 mailboxes and all the rest are forwards, mean that the message sent to that address doesn't get stored in the server, instead it gets forwarded to the other address specified.

How to do that with Gmail, that's what we're going to know shortly ;)

Hi All,

I had been managing a few Facebook pages lately and had a very good experience  running them, but in DeveloperMan Facebook Page (Link: http://facebook.com/DeveloperMan), while I'm able to upload and record videos from the wall:

I found the native "Video" application not installed in the page?!! The same situation in Al-Adham page too (Link: http://facebook.com/aladhamweb).

Managing 6 active pages, 2 pages doesn't have the Facebook native "Video" application installed, as a result, I'm not able to add a video box or tab, for fans to easily find the videos I upload! And as soon as the page wall get updated the videos will gradually disappear from the page, with the stream of updates!!

The obvious solutions would be simply adding the "Video" application to the page, as I add any other application, but so far I haven't found a way to add that specific application to these couple of pages and currently searching for a solution. The application page drive to http://www.facebook.com/video/.

I have an observations that might have something to do with the problem, but not pretty sure.

When we create a page on Facebook, we're asked to chose a category for the page, the applications installed on the page by default will be different according to the category, beside the available fields to fill in the info tab.

I'm in search for the ideal solution to go about the problem currently. Do you have any idea how should I go about that?

Anyway, I'll conduct more research and keep you posted, at the mean time, feel free to subscribe via RSS, Email or joining DeveloperMan Page to keep yourself updated ;)

Thanks

Experimenting with Chromakey videos

by Abdo on August 2, 2009

Hey There,

Home made potential Chroma key stage @ my home office

I'm experimenting from a while with Chroma Key videos, and started getting some interesting results recently with my new video camera.

Light and Material of background is the most important points to consider while going for Chroma key video. I thought why should I go for Chroma key and suspend videos creation till getting a satisfactory results?? And decided to make normal videos for now, till I get everything sorted out with the light and background.

I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 for editing my videos and reached an advanced skill level using it, but still working with such projects need so much time and dedication.

As you're expecting, I'll be making Vlogs about web development, but didn't decide on where am I going to host it yet, but mostly will on  YouTube and other sites too, to get maximum views and drive traffic back at my blog here.

The videos are going to be for both novice developers looking to get their hands dirty and business professionals taking development decisions. Format will be Vlogs, presentations and screen recording videos.

So, stay tuned and expect some awesome videos soon.

Hi All,

I had been using Twitter Facebook application to syndicate my Facebook status with my latest Tweet @abdo_me. When started preparing for DeveloperMan project and started a Facebook Page for it along with other pages too, I wanted to do the same with my pages (i.e. Updating DeveloperMan FB page with @DeveloperMan Twitter account) and could not do it with the installed Twitter application!

After research, I found the "Selective Twitter" FB application and found it really interesting, I can select which Tweet to syndicated with my Facebook status by adding #fb in the desired Tweet. I can also use it on my pages to update their status the same way.

Application:
http://apps.facebook.com/selectivetwitter

I decided to use the above application, as those couple of features were important for me. You might need to grant permission to your account to update the page's status as follows:

Thought someone might need those features too.

Have fun!

Supporting Arabic Soon

by Abdo on March 7, 2009

Hi All,

I'm in the process of supporting Arabic on my business website, and all of my ongoing development work, including blogging here.

I know that here things aren't active yet, but It would be better to take a decision now better than after that.

I'm thinking about creating a standalone Arabic blog here, and translate my blogs between Arabic and English.

So it'd be http://developerman.com/en/ and http://developerman.com/ar/ as blogging with both languages in one blog will become distracting.

I'm applying that to my personal blog too http://abdo.me

Stay tuned, I'll kick start that soon.

Regards,
Abdo

Joomla! Adding Menu Item for VirtuMart

by Abdo on February 10, 2009

Hi,

Had been just experimenting with video tutorials, as I'm planning to widely make use of it in my online businesses, so created a video today illustrating how to create a menu item in Joomla! with type VirtuMart.

The video had been mainly created for a client, you can preview it in my FB Page http://companies.to/DeveloperMan

Or I'm embedding it here:

Expect more Video tutorials to come, will be in English the next time, that one had been in Arabic
